As part of the plan of actions of the NAES of Ukraine for the implementation of the Concept of Civic Education in Ukraine for 2024-2030, the Institute of Higher Education of the NAES of Ukraine held a cultural and educational event on the topic “Yevhen Chikalenko – statesman, agrarian, philanthropist who taught to love Ukraine to the depth of one’s own pocket”, which was presented to the audience by Anzhela Savchenko – director of “Kyiv Frescoes” tourist agency, guide on Ukraine, manager of cultural heritage projects of “Kryla” NGO, an independent researcher of local history.

In the course of the event the audience got acquainted with the little-known figure of Yevhen Kharlampiyovych Chikalenko (1861–1929): the conditions and circumstances of the formation of his Ukrainian-centric identity in his childhood and youth; attraction to social activities; the beginning of managing one’s own farm in the Kherson region and the introduction of the latest technology of “black steam” land cultivation and the circumstances of the publication of “Black steam and crop rotation” – a Ukrainian book that was recommended for use in educational institutions of the appropriate profile; initiating and financing the publishing of the newspapers “Rada”, “Nova Rada” and other projects in support of Ukrainian writers and artists; the last years of life in Ukraine and emigration and Yevhen Kharlampiyovych’s active participation in the activities of the Ukrainian Economic Academy in Podebrady (Czechoslovakia); the historical oblivion of his name and the return to the Ukrainian present a century later.
